 Source: Mediascrape
Australia's incoming Prime Minister prepares to sign the country up to the Kyoto Protocol on climate change. MOREINFO: Australian Labor Party leader Kevin Rudd is vowing immediate action to ratify the deal after his election victory brought to an end more than a decade of rule by John Howard's Liberal Party. SCRIPT: The first port of call for Australia's incoming Prime Minister was a family trip to church. The top priority on Kevin Rudd's political to-do list is signing the country up to the Kyoto Protocol on climate change long opposed by his predecessor. He's taking advice on signing the pact and says he will go to December's UN climate change summit in Bali. In the meantime Rudd is set to announce his new cabinet next week. SOUNDBITE: Australian Labor Party leader Kevin Rudd saying (English): "We have an agenda for the future, we have therefore an agenda of work now to prosecute, and to do that effectively we need the best team to do it. I will be spending the next several days to determine the composition of the team." Rudd's Labor party swept to victory on a wave of support for his message of new leadership after 11 years with John Howard at the helm. The election outcome has left Howard's Liberal Party in tatters and its supporters upset about the surge to the left. SOUNDBITE: Unidentified Liberal Party supporter saying (English): "I knew this was going to happen but I can't understand it happening because the government was a good government." SOUNDBITE: Unidentified Liberal Party supporter saying (English): "Very disappointed actually. We had a good run and it's a bit of a shame how it had to finish but I think work choices took the toll." U.S. President George Bush has congratulated Rudd on his election victory but future relations may not be easy with Rudd keen to begin the withdrawal of Australian front line forces from Iraq.
