Palestinians demand the safe return of displaced refugees as battles rage around a refugee camp in north Lebanon. An Islamist militant group warns the violence could spread across the country. Palestinian refugees in Lebanon protested on Friday (June 1) against the Lebanese army's shelling of a refugee camp in the north where Islamist militants were holed up. Refugees in Beirut's Bourj al-Barajneh camp took to the streets after Friday prayers demanding a ceasefire in the Nahr al-Bared camp and the return of all displaced refugees. A truce in the fighting last week allowed thousands of refugees to flee to nearby camps or to Beirut. Bourj al-Barajneh camp is hosting tens of the displaced. "Lift the siege against us, we have had enough destruction and killing," read one banner, referring the army's closing of all entrances to the camp since May 20. "The people of Nahr al-Bared are asking for two things, to return to their homes in Nahr al-Bared and to return to Palestine," one protester said. The clashes between the Lebanese army and the fighters of the Fatah al-Islam group is Lebanon's worst internal violence since the 1975-1990 civil war. At least 84 people -- 35 soldiers, 29 militants and 20 civilians -- have been killed. In the southern Ain al-Hilweh camp, the biggest in Lebanon housing about 70,000 refugees, an Islamist group warned the violence in the north could spread if the army action continued.
