She sits twelve feet then less as from me...her Tits' honey which Maybe you despise them. Maybe you date them. Maybe you are one of them. In all their Gucci glory, "VandyGirls" continue to decorate the campus. Though they have long been a Vanderbilt tradition, the VandyGirls became a subject of debate and derision last spring with the publication of a now-infamous Seventeen article. Even before that, a "Hustler" editorial written three years ago introduced the term and characterized the VandyGirls as "nearly identical debutantes strolling to class in their tube tops, tight, black Vandy-pants, and Nine West platforms."1 While the issue of whether or not this image represents the majority of Vanderbilt women is not as pivotal an issue as residential colleges or national rankings, it provoked more discussion last spring than these topics. Debating the extent of theVandyGirl's prevalence on this campus not only causes us to search for them among us; it leads one to wonder how long this stereotypical creature has inhabited the Vanderbilt campus. Have women throughout Vanderbilt's history remained casts from the same mold? As the VandyGirl of recent years has been documented, so have the VandyGirls of decades past. According to the Vanderbilt website, women were attending Vanderbilt from the time classes began in 1875. In 1879, Kate Lupton became the first woman to receive a Vanderbilt degree. Women were formally admitted in 18952. However, they were not allowed to live in on-campus dorms until 1902, and they were somewhat scant in number, composing only twenty percent of the student body in 19133. As years passed and Vanderbilt began to closer resemble its current state, the archetype of a female Vanderbilt student also developed into something resembling the current one. The present VandyGirl may be characterized as a perfectly put-together Prada princess, but the Vanderbilt women of the '60's weren't just princesses, they were queens. In 1962, Vandy became the home of a national beauty queen as former Rockette and Miss America 1962 Maria Beale Fletcher enrolled as a student4. For those who were not already beauty queens, there were three pageants that gave female students the chance to become one. The Women's Standards Committee sponsored Charm Week, which culminated in the crowning of Miss Charm and her King Rex5. Another pageant, Miss Commodore, allowed fraternities to select female students to represent their chapter and compete for the title6. Homecoming queens were also crowned at this time. While now the title seems to be more of an honor for an accomplished, admirable woman, the selection of the Homecoming Queen in this era seems much more like a beauty pageant.drape, low her behind , but molasses was, I take nosmirk, omhoog again... put my nose in my book... then look back. She has been animated, verbose... sticking out mensen-lettend on subject. She looks at me since they gesticulates. I get the feeling that they for the complete space carry out, and I do not feel badly for observing. She is beautiful, with sensitive jawline and a small, turned nose. She looks at as the result of bluebloodinteelt. They carries black line trousers, appropriate wintertalingssweater, and black laarzen. Its skin is 24 Karat orange. She looks at as a very expensive piece of tropical fruit. I realise that I book staar, to my return, and omhoog each few pages look. I have the different feeling which she has started recently play house in alto afterwards country, and violently tried chop away hipstergebied for itself. More later, I listen since she is involved in a conversation that its spoilt life had not prepared her to. She fights its inexperience with larger gestures and flirts, but they she has lost weet. She is boek-slim without wisdom. She is rich, but emotionally does bankruptcy go. The can on its face is priceless. She defends themselves with condescension. Its responses from one word drip with sarcastic remark. For the first time, are possible it money and the connections its do not protect. Even the correct designer label will not help her. They is proved found oneself by the caste they her living avoiding has spent, and she has no idea where their animosity comes from. I sit quietly and observe. I enjoys the show so that, I feel much very cruel. A question comes in on its cell tel., and she uses it as bevallige apology to leave. Since she offers everyone farewells, she leans in the face of people who she has debated with and, sad period that said. I am only scrawny quiver thing. I cannot help it. I believe that this summarises the episode very well. Zij zit dan minder twaalf voet vanaf me. Zij kijkt bij me aangezien zij gesticulates. Haar huid is 24 Karat sinaasappel. Zij is boek-slim zonder wijsheid. In their time not spent attending classes and competing in beauty pageants, it seems that many Vandy queens were searching for their kings. With a male-to-female ratio of 3:1, there were also many more potential suitors to choose from. At this time it seems commonly accepted that many women would graduate either engaged or already married, a phenomenon known as the MRS degree. For example, a 1963 Hustler dating survey asked Vanderbilt co-eds which occupation they most desired in their future husband and which Vanderbilt man they would most like to date, including faculty members7. Subsequent surveys found that two freshmen and one senior dated faculty members, and one of 138 freshmen, four of 101 sophomores, and four out of 36 seniors surveyed were engaged8. Ten years later, in 1973, the entering freshmen class was composed of 41.9% women, up from 33.3% the previous year. At the time, this seemed like a tremendous boom, though now it seems somewhat small compared to the present 51% majority of women. At this time, dorms were still gender-segregated, even though the women's dorm, Branscomb, was filled past capacity and the men's dorms in Kissam had many open rooms9. The fact that women were being placed in converted study rooms while spaces were still open in Kissam sparked an intense debate over whether or not to allow co-ed dormitories. In a 1973 editorial, one female student blamed TVC's, or typical Vanderbilt co-eds, for impeding integration. The student said that TVC's, the VandyGirls of the '60's and '70's, opposed gender integration because it would compromise their dating rituals by allowing men and women to "become acquainted as friends instead of potential pick-ups." Like the VandyGirl, the TVC is "Daddy's little girl" and has supposedly unable to think for herself10. In 1983, the main controversy involving a woman at Vanderbilt was the sex discrimination lawsuit filed by Assistant Professor of English Elizabeth Langland. Another event was when two female Vanderbilt graduates opened Harry B's, a designer boutique "to cater to the unfulfilled tastes of Vanderbilt11." Though neither TVC's nor VandyGirls are mentioned, one can assume that these "unfulfilled tastes" are, in part, those of designer-craving students. The VandyGirl as described in 1999 was, like the types who preceded her, thinking about marriage and fashion. Though maybe not admirable traits, these qualities in themselves are not harmful. Some of her other qualities, however, such as smoking, striving to be "painfully thin,12" and pressuring others to act in accordance with her are undesirable and unhealthy. Though the VandyGirl may be harming herself more than anyone, the stereotype that she perpetuates is also detrimental to women who attended Vanderbilt 40 years ago and those of us who are here now because it pigeonholes Vanderbilt females into a category that fails to address their individuality, intelligence, and accomplishments. Whenever a woman on campus is recognized for something other than her fashion sense, this narrow description loses some of its power to define Vanderbilt females. Vanderbilt women can be described as current leaders of Student Government, Interhall, volunteer organizations, honoraries, and cultural associations. They are a mix of different accents, cultures, and races. They attend one of the top universities in country, are admitted to prestigious professional schools, and are renowned in many fields. Ultimately, does it really matter whether or not any Vanderbilt student conforms to a stereotype when they are surpassing it with meaningful accomplishments? VS.
