Bhutto's son named successor
 Source: Mediascrape
(SOUNDBITE) (English) BILAWAL BHUTTO-ZARDARI, CHAIRMAN PAKISTAN PEOPLES PARTY SAYING: "Like all chairmen of the PPP, I will stand as the symbol of the Federation. The party's long and historic struggle for democracy will continue with renewed vigour and I stand committed to the stability of the Federation. My mother always said: Democracy is the best revenge." 19-year-old Bilawal Zardari Bhutto - law student and heir to Pakistan's most powerful political dynasty. Benazir Bhutto's widower Asif Ali Zardari was named in his wife's political will as her sole successor. But he asked party leaders to make their son co-chairman of the Pakistan People's Party (PPP) guaranteeing the continuation of the Bhutto legacy. At 19, Bilawal is still too young to enter politics and the teenager will return to England to finish his university studies leaving Zadari to run the party. Speaking from the family home in Naudero following the reading of Bhutto's political will, Zardari said the PPP would contest the January 8 elections as their murdered leader would have wanted. He also announced that the couple's three children would be changing their name to Bhutto. A senior government official had earlier suggested that the polls would have be delayed following Bhutto's assassination last week - but pressure is now mounting on President Musharraf to hold the elections on time. Opposition leader and former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, whose Pakistan Muslim League vowed to would boycott the polls, says it will now take part. Violence and political turmoil have swept Pakistan since Bhutto's death, leaving dozens dead and the future uncertain. The PPP wants a special U.N. Commission to investigate the assassination and is calling on Britain to help. Controversy rages over how Bhutto died - with the government's account at odds with her party's version of events. The decision on whether to hold the elections - now just days away - will be the most important decison President Musharraf will have to make. Helen Long, Reuters
