ANCHOR: The Human Rights Torch Relay arrived in Warsaw on a day when freedom was crushed in China, but gained in Poland in 1989. Polish people are now raising awareness about human rights violations in China. Here's more from our correspondents. STORY: People gathered at the Chinese embassy in Warsaw to support the Human Rights Torch Relay on the 19th anniversary of the Tiananmen Square Massacre, which is the same day when Poles had their first free elections behind the iron curtain in 1989. It was the biggest victory for 'Solidarity' -- a nine-million strong movement that set off a domino effect, bringing down the Soviet regime. One of the organizers of the Solidarity movement remembers the political, technical and humanitarian help Poland received from democratic countries in the past. He points out that now's time for Poland to help other countries, such as China, to break away from totalitarianism. [Mirek Chojecki, Solidarity Trade Union]: "We can do more. Not only for the Olympic Games, you know, because the Olympic Games it will be two weeks, but what [about] after? I think that we must think not to support the Chinese regime, not to invest money in China, not to have a very good economic relationship with China because in China many people work like slaves." Having lived under a communist dictatorship in the past, some Polish people are concerned about what the Chinese are going through today and want to support them. [Tomasz Korczynski, Sociologist, Christians in Need]: (MALE SOUNDBITE IN POLISH) "This ideology of evil [communism], the one that John Paul II repeatedly called a civilization of death, has possessed the people of China, and wants to enslave them completely. Our organization wants to tell people in Poland and around the world, to inform them, of what is happening in China today. We also want to show Chinese people that we have not forgotten them; that we are their ambassadors; that we are their representatives; that we are a sort of loudspeaker for them, speaking in their stead, when they are unable to speak for themselves." The Human Rights Torch Relay will arrive next in Japan on June 17th. NTD, Warsaw, Poland
