CARL AZUZ, CNN STUDENT NEWS ANCHOR: We are rolling into the weekend here at CNN Student News, and we\'re glad to have you along for the ride. Hi, everyone. I\'m Carl Azuz. Shoutout GEORGE RAMSAY, CNN STUDENT NEWS: Time for the Shoutout! In which state did these Democratic presidential candidates debate on Thursday? You know what to do! Was it: A) Iowa, B) New Hampshire, C) Vermont or D) Washington? You\'ve got three seconds -- GO! Yesterday\'s Democratic debate was in Iowa\'s state capital of Des Moines. That\'s your answer and that\'s your Shoutout! First Up: Democrats Debate AZUZ: If you were with us yesterday, you know that was Des Moines\' second debate in as many days. We already told you about the Republican event that took place on Wednesday. Well, Thursday, the Democrats took to the stage, hoping to stand out to voters before Iowa\'s first-in-the-nation caucuses in January. Laura Taylor fills us in on what the presidential hopefuls had to say. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) LAURA TAYLOR, CNN REPORTER: After wrapping up business on Capitol Hill, Democrats vying for the White House raced off to Iowa hoping to gain ground in what\'s shaping up as a very tight race. FROM DEBATE: Welcome to day two of our Des Moines Iowa debates. TAYLOR: With just three weeks until the Iowa caucuses, the 6 invited candidates were questioned on topics Iowans wanted to know more about, like the nation\'s financial crisis, education. JOHN EDWARDS, (D) PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: We need to radically change No Child Left Behind - if that doesn\'t work, we should get rid of it. TAYLOR: And the U.S. Relationship with China. BILL RICHARDSON, (D) PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: We must ban some of these toys they\'re bringing in. we ought to ban some of the contaminated food they\'re bringing in. TAYLOR: The candidates wasted no time taking jabs at the current administration. SENATOR BARACK OBAMA, (D) PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: Because of the polices of George Bush and the Republicans in Congress, not only do we have fiscal problems but we have growing inequality. People are working harder for less. TAYLOR: Or their GOP opponents, who debated on the same stage Wednesday. SEN. HILLARY CLINTON, (D) PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: Carolyn do you want us to raise our hands to talk about global warming because we didn\'t get a good response from Republicans yesterday. TAYLOR: But when it came to one another, they played nice. When Senator Joe Biden was questioned about racially insensitive comments he\'s made in the past, fellow Senator Barack Obama stepped in. SENATOR BARACK OBAMA, (D) PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: I\'ve worked with Joe Biden. I\'ve seen his leadership. I have absolutely no doubt about what is in his heart. TAYLOR: Reporting from Atlanta, I\'m Laura Taylor. (END VIDEO CLIP) Shoutout Extra Credit RAMSAY: Today\'s second Shoutout goes out to Mrs. Shepperd\'s history classes at Wallace Junior/Senior High School in Wallace, Idaho! Which sport is known as America\'s "national pastime"? Here we go! Is it: A) Football, B) Basketball, C) Soccer or D) Baseball? You\'ve got three seconds -- GO! Baseball\'s been a hit with Americans since the 19th century, and that\'s why it\'s called the "national pastime." That\'s your answer and that\'s your Shoutout Extra Credit! All-Star Lineup AZUZ: Opening day is still months away. But the national pastime is in the spotlight right now. For nearly two years, former U.S. Senator George Mitchell has been investigating the use of performance-enhancing drugs in baseball. And yesterday, he released a report on his findings. Keith Oppenheim explains what it says, and what it could mean for the future of the sport. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) KEITH OPPENHEIM, CNN REPORTER: It\'s an all star line-up--dozens of Major League Baseball players have been named in the much-anticipated Mitchell report on drug use in baseball. David Justice, Barry Bonds, Lenny Dykstra, John Rocker and Roger Clemens among the most prominent. GEORGE MITCHELL, MLB STEROID INVESTIGATOR: Each of the players was invited to meet with me so I could provide him with information about the allegations and give him an opportunity to respond. Almost without exception, all current players declined my invitation. OPPENHEIM: The report is the result of a 20-month investigation into the use of steroids and other performance enhancing drugs by league players. The report said there\'s been widespread use of drugs since 2002. The controversy engaged lawmakers today before the report came out: SEN. JOHN MCCAIN, (R) PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE: I would strongly urge the Major League Players Association to sit down with the owners and we restore confidence back in the game and about and to the performance of those players. OPPENHEIM: In his report, Mitchell recommended major league baseball should use an independent agency to conduct drug testing of its players: RICHARD MCLAREN, REPORT ADVISOR: Senator Mitchell\'s recommendations are exactly what baseball needs to remove the sting of performance enhancing substance used in the game. OPPENHEIM: One thing Senator Mitchell did not recommend: to punish those players listed in the report, in part because many of the violations happened years ago. Instead, he said all efforts to stop drug abuse in baseball should be directed to the future. In New York, for CNN Student News, I\'m Keith Oppenheim. (END VIDEO CLIP) Word to the Wise RAMSAY: A Word to the Wise...neonatal (adjective) relating to newborn children Source: www.dictionary.com Ice Baby AZUZ: Crews are working to get the power back on in parts of the Midwestern U.S., after a severe winter storm blew through the region several days ago. Earlier this week, we told you about some of the damage caused by the weather system. Well for one Iowa family, the icy conditions nearly caused a neo-natal nightmare. Erika Cervantes of affiliate KGAN has the details. (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) ERIKA CERVANTES, KGAN REPORTER: When Dorotea Orgovanyi came into the world it wasn\'t the joyful occasion surrounding most births. Tara arrived pre-maturely. At only 26 weeks, her tiny body went into respiratory distress. Born at the Henry County Hospital, a small rural facility that doesn\'t have the equipment to care for Tara, she needed to be moved to University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Normally that would call for \'Aircare\', but due to the storm: DR. MICHAEL ACARREGUI, UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL: We weren\'t able to fly or go by ground, and that was the dilemma. CERVANTES: So, Doctor Acarregui, along with his colleague Dr. John Dagle, hopped in Acarregui\'s car and drove through the rain and ice to Mount Pleasant. Upon their arrival the first thing they did was insert a breathing tube and stabilized Tara\'s breathing. Then with the help of ambulance drivers, they built an incubator in the back of the ambulance. ACARREGUI: They actually had to disassemble and reassemble it in the ambulance so the baby could be warm. And for ventilation Dr Dagle actually bagged the baby. He provided ventilation all the way back. CERVANTES: Once at University of Iowa Hospitals the two-pound baby was taken to the neo-natal intensive care unit. Acarregui says Tara is doing well and while she has a 96% chance of surviving, the baby is not out of the woods yet. ACARREGUI: She\'s at risk for some serious complications and that will become more apparent over the next few days or weeks. CERVANTES: He adds, Tara\'s home will be here in Iowa City for the next 12 to 14 weeks. Erika Cervantes, CBS2 News. Off the Beaten Path AZUZ: When the chihuahua appears, you know what\'s coming. We\'ve seen diminutive doggies, galloping gorillas and legendary leg hair. But what intriguing items will we encounter on this excursion... off the beaten path? (BEGIN VIDEO CLIP) CARL AZUZ, CNN STUDENT NEWS: It\'s Christmas time at the White House. And the annual video of the nation\'s \'first dog\' is out making the rounds. It shows Barney Bush playing in the snow, playing with ornaments, playing with national officials, even former British Prime Minister Tony Blair cameoed in the Scottish terrier\'s movie: TONY BLAIR, FMR. BRITISH PRIME MINISTER: As someone born in Edinburgh, Scotland, it\'s always good to see the Scots doing well AZUZ: But it doesn\'t answer any of the really pressing questions, like is Barney allowed on Air Force One? Has he ever bitten a foreign leader? What happens if he leaves his own present under the tree? One thing we do know for sure: It ain\'t a dog\'s life! In other animal news...The space shuttle was grounded, partly \'cause of a bad fuel sensor. The other reason: when spiders strike! An abnormally immense arachnid attacked Atlantis ahead of its appointed embarkation. Okay, this was just a normal-sized spider that looked huge on the camera lens, much to the relief of arachnaphobes and astronauts. But traffic violators better stay on their toes... or brakes. \'Cause breakin\' it down in the streets of Rhode Island, is a cop with a really arresting habit. Now if you or I were to do this in traffic, we\'d be booked and printed. But when Tony Lapore takes to the streets, he has the right to remain rhythmic! Some officers pound the pavement, pursuing perps. This guy dips, dives and discos, directing drivers. He first got in the groove about 20 years ago, and leaps out of retirement to leap into his Christmas tradition. This is Carl Azuz, reporting from Off the Beaten Path! (END VIDEO CLIP) Goodbye AZUZ: Maybe he spends the rest of the year working on those sweet moves. Well that\'s where we leap on out of here. Have a great weekend, everyone.
