Israeli forces made two new forays into Lebanon and now hold seven positions that one Israeli broadcaster said on Thursday (August 3) were part of a "security zone" Israel would hold until peacekeepers arrive. As fighting raged on, Hizbollah guerrillas facing some 10,000 Israeli troops in south Lebanon killed two soldiers and wounded several, and fired scores of rockets over into Israel, killing seven people. Lebanese security sources said Hizbollah fighters, unfazed by a three-week Israeli bombing campaign, attacked Israeli units using anti-tank rockets, mortars and assault rifles. U.N. peacekeepers of the UNIFIL force said the Israelis had made two new incursions into Lebanon in the past 24 hours and kept their hold of five other areas previously seized. "Heavy exchanges of fire continued unabated throughout the UNIFIL area of operation," a statement said. "It was reported that the IDF made two new ground incursions." Lebanese security sources said the Israeli-held enclaves were some two to five km (one to three miles) inside Lebanon. An Israeli television channel said the army had carved out a "security zone" of 20 villages in south Lebanon up to six km (four miles) from the border. An army spokesman said he could not confirm this but said Israel had "several positions of control in several villages."
