Baghdad on lockdown
Duration: 2:11Source: YouTube
Hello on this Friday, the 28 day of March 2008. I'm Kristin Volk with today's news headline. The city of Baghdad is under a virtual lockdown today as a new curfew ordered everyone off the streets of the Iraqi capital. Five other cities in Iraq are also under the same order until Sunday evening. However, the restriction didn't stop rockets and bombs from flying into the heavily fortified Green Zone, killing three people in the last day. Iraqi Prime M Minister Nuri al-Maliki launched the military operation earlier this week in the southern city of Basra to crack down on the militia of Shiite cleric Muqtada al Sadr.Senator Barack Obama says that he would have left his church if his pastor hadn't retired. The Democratic presidential hopeful made the comment in a TV interview today. Video footage of Obama's pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, shows him making remarks in his sermons that many view as anti-American and racist toward whites. The Illinois senator also denounced articles that appeared in his church bulletins this week. The articles, which were reprinted from other sources, say that South Africa and Israel worked on an ethnic bomb that kills blacks and Arabs.Meanwhile, Senator Bob Casey of Pennsylvania is endorsing Senator Barack Obama for the Democratic presidential nomination. Casey is one of the state's last undecided superdelegates. The backing comes at a crucial time for the senator who's campaigning across Pennsylvania to prepare for the primary there next month. His rival, Senator Hillary Clinton, leads in the state's polls and has the endorsement of the governor and other prominent Democrats.U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates is ordering an inventory of the U.S. nuclear arsenal in the wake of the shipment mix-up with Taiwan. Earlier this week, it was reported that ballistic missile parts were sent to Taiwan instead of helicopter batteries it requested. The secretary is demanding that the inventory be completed within 60 days. Initial reports indicate that the mix-up happened because the parts were mislabeled. Thanks for watching today's news webcast. Check out wrap-up from the White House on upi.com today, and have a nice weekend.
