USA: Las Vegas in a Hepatitis C scare

There's major outrage in Las Vegas after the Southern Nevada Health District announced Thursday (February 28) that unsafe practices at a medical clinic may have led to six reported cases of Hepatitis C, a potentially fatal blood-borne virus. Health officials say they believe the Las Vegas medical centre had been reusing syringes and vials of anaesthesia, exposing its patients to the blood of others. Some 40,000 people who were treated at the medical clinic, as far back as 2004 as well as their partners, are now being told to get tested for hepatitis, strains C and B, and HIV. The clinic issued a statement saying it had cleaned up its practices and was cooperating with the health district's investigation. Federal health officials have discovered the almost incomprehensible practice at one of the city's largest gastrointestinal clinics: doctors and nurses at the "endoscopy centre of southern nevada" regularly re-used syringes and vials from patient to patient - leading to an outbreak of Hepatitis C three times the normal rate for Nevada. This has sparked the largest medical notification of its kind in the nation. There have been six confirmed cases of acute Hepatitis C stemming from the clinic - but health officials fear more people may have been infected.
