Field Exercise 3 (Short Version)
Duration: 1:29Source: YouTube
Design Problem: A desert chair made of recyclable material This exercise really brought out the creativity in all of the group members. Initially, the group felt a little overwhelmed after reading the assignment sheet. But after meeting and brainstorming, we actually came up with some great ideas. As we spent a lot of time researching different materials, we believe our chair addresses all of the constraints. Our chair is made of materials, mainly plastic, that are able to withstand extreme heat and monsoons. We made sure that none of our materials would melt or become to hot to sit on, like aluminum, in the high desert temperatures. Nor will our chair be damaged or become flimsy from the wet monsoon season (i.e. cardboard could potentially become damaged by soaking in water). The plastic chicken wire works to let air circulate and also to drain water that could potentially collect if it were to rain. The flexibility of the chicken wire lets one lean back for complete comfort and relaxation. The white plastic bags that were stuffed into the chair contribute to the comfort of the chair while not absorbing as much heat as black material would. We made sure that the chair has legs, in effort to prevent desert critters to crawl up onto the person relaxing in our chair. In efforts to keep this chair environmentally-friendly, each group member collected useful materials that were recycled or recyclable. This was actually beneficial because it made the chair fairly light in weight. The design problem of creating a chair that could withstand Arizona's extreme weather, made out of recyclable materials, proved to be challenging, but it opened our eyes to a lot of creative paths in learning how to design appropriate everyday necessities, like chairs, that work with our immediate surroundings.
