Iran's test launch of nine medium and long-range missiles has added further heat to the tensions over its controversial nuclear programme. The weapons included one Iranian officials have previously said was capable of reaching Israel, and American military bases in the region. An Iranian television report said the Shahab-3 missile carried a one-tonne conventional warhead. It said the tests were part of a programme of military exercises taking place in response to threats from Israel and the United States. There is growing speculation that Israel may attack Iran's nuclear sites. Israeli air force exercises last month are being viewed as a rehearsal for the possibility of such strikes. The U.S. is urging Iran not to carry out any further missile tests if it truly seeks to gain the trust of the world. White House officials are also calling on Tehran to halt development of ballistic missiles which could be used to carry atomic warheads. News of the missile tests pushed oil and gold prices up and unnerved markets. Paul Chapman, Reuters
