Homeland Security Money

Since 9-11, the Federal Government has given out money to make states safer. North Dakota has received millions of dollars in federal Homeland Security money. For the Bismarck Police department it has meant a mobile command post, a robot and personal protection equipment like masks and suits. Deputy Chief Keith Witt says they are items the department needs to respond to incidents involving terrorism. (Keith Witt / They not be full scale emergency situation but on smaller scale we have a need to use equipment, so routinely used. Both to assist to deal with day to day incidents that may come up and to maintain proficiency to use when need to. North Dakota Homeland Security Director Greg Wilz says our states share of federal Homeland Security money has dropped from 19.4 million dollars in 2004 to less than 6.7 million dollars this year. Wilz says the declining federal funding means the state will have to focus it's dollars more in the future on homeland security.
