Meghalaya goes to polls amid tight security

Meghalaya, March 3, 2008 : Polling for the single-phase elections for state assembly in India's northeastern Meghalaya state began on the morning of March 3, amidst tight security. More than 1.2 million voters are expected to exercise their franchise during the elections. Altogether 331 candidates, including six former state chiefs, prominent among them being P A Sangma, former speaker of Lok Sabha are in fray for the elections to the eighth Meghalaya Assembly.
