South Africa's Archbishop Desmond Tutu makes a passionate plea for African leaders to reprimand Zimbabwean President Robert Mugabe and to insist a transitional government to resolve the election crisis. South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu has added his voice to growing calls for African leaders not to recognise Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe in protest at the June 27th one-man election. Speaking at an event at the University of Cape Town, on Tuesday (July 1), Tutu implored the continent's politicians to speak out against Mugabe's regime. "What do we want? We want African leaders to confound the Afro-pessimists and to say, 'Hey, this election was illegitimate.' We want them...to reprimand Mr Mugabe and to insist on negotiations for a transitional government in which the MDC (Movement for Democratic Change) would have the prominent part," said Tutu. Tutu went on to accuse Mugabe of presiding over torture and intimidation in order to grab power. He also warned of the dangers of people pledging they are prepared to kill for their leaders. His comments followed assertions last month by leaders of the African National Congress (ANC) Youth League and COSATU (Congress of South African Trade Unions) that they were ready to kill for ANC President, Jacob Zuma.
