One year ago today, three Odessa police corporals were shot and killed at an Odessa home, two died at the scene and one passed away only days later. September 8, 2007, the whole Odessa community was shaken to the core. Mayor Larry Melton says, "We have officially entered a period of mourning." As they found out corporals Arlie Jones, Scott Gardner and Abel Marquez were shot and killed responding to a domestic disturbance call. One year later, the feelings still linger. Melton said, "I went to the scene the night of the shooting a year ago and was there 3 or 4 hours and it was a very emotional time, that hasn't changed, I still have very vivid memories of that evening." As do many of the residents who lived just feet away, watching as the scene unfolded. A resident on the block, Debbie Howell, said, "It was scary, I didn't know the guy but it was scary because this was basically a good part of town." Many remember it all, as if it was just yesterday. Howell said, "those emotions come back, you've got SWAT on top of the house." Some say the shootings left neighbors looking for new homes. James Johnson, a resident, said, "Everybody has different feelings, people are selling their houses thinking it could happen here again." City leaders hope, the community will continue to heal. Melton said, "I think all of us realize and the three officers would want us to move on and make things better for the entire community." And the memories of the three officers will live on. Melton said, "These three gave the ultimate sacrifice and I don't think this community will ever forget it." Larry Neil White still sits in jail awaiting word on when his trial will be for the three capital murder charges and three for attempted capital murder.
