Obama: The Promise and The Hope That We Confess by Brian Snow August 29, 2008 Given that the Obama campaign has been reaching out to evangelicals and other people of faith, I guess I as a Christian was supposed to be impressed when Barack Obama closed his nomination acceptance speech Thursday night by tossing me a scripture. Obama quoted from Hebrews 10:23 when he said, "Let us keep that promise — that American promise -- and in the words of Scripture hold firmly, without wavering, to the hope that we confess." Now from time to time you'll hear a politician quote a scripture of general moral precept (e.g. "Do unto others...", "Whatever you did for the least of these...", "brother's keeper", etc), but what politician besides Barack Obama has ever had the audacity to hijack a scripture which refers exclusively to Jesus Christ as the hope Christians confess for their salvation -- and apply it to himself or to his brand of "hope" for America? Sorry, Barack: the hope that I confess for my salvation is not in you or anything to do with your politics! While you hold that thought, consider that when Michelle Obama related in both her Monday night DNC address and in Thursday night's Obama tribute video how Barack spoke of "the world as it is" and "the world as it should be" she was quoting straight out of Obama's handbook for community organizing: Rules for Radicals.
