Before any 'altercation' with the authorities, Ned was the eldest teenage son of a widow. He worked farming to support his mother and siblings at the age of 14. The film concludes bitterly identifying the hardships and idiots all farmers are exposed to, enough some might say to stir craziness in the blood. Perhaps not a luxury the farmer can afford.
