When used the way they are intended to be used, the ingredients in OTC cough and cold medications are safe for the majority of children. However when they are not used appropriately disastrous events can occur. Every year it is estimated that over 7000 children under 12 years old are treated in an emergency department following an adverse reaction from an OTC cough and cold medication. Most of these visits (64%) are by children between the ages of 2 and 5 years old.
