A 200-foot-tall crane collapsed Friday morning at the Iatan 2 Power Plant construction site in Platte County, killing one person and injuring three other contractors. The accident was reported at about 7:30 a.m. The Iatan Power Plant, which is northwest of Weston, is operated by Kansas City Power & Light. KCP&L spokesman Matt Tidwell said no KCP&L workers were injured. The construction site was shut down so investigators could look into the accident. "While it would be premature to speculate as to the exact reason for the accident, it appears the crane had sent its boom up to check the wind speed at the site, and having determined that the wind speed would preclude safe operations, was in the process of lowering the boom when the incident occurred," according to a press release from KCP&L. KCP&L said the 80-ton crane was not bearing any load at the time. There were no wind advisories in effect at the time. The National Weather Service said winds were blowing from the east-northeast at 16 mph, gusting to 28 mph. Forecasters said the winds were not out of the ordinary. KMBC reported that last year, KCP&L was fined $21,000 by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration following a high pressure water line rupture that killed two men and injured two others.
