minute thumbnail 06:14 pm streaks across new mexico’s sky- and it was all caught on a couple of high- tech cameras in albuquerque and in santa fe. gadi schwartz spoke with one astronomer who says it could mean a meteorite landed somewhere north of taos. its hard to guess its size- whatever it was made a very big and bright splash as it hit the atmosphere. here's the video captured by santa fe astronomer thomas ashcraft as a meteor- almost brighter than the moon- plummeted toward earth. it's video taken from a fisheye camera set up to record falng stars every night. last friday at 2 in the morning- it captured high frequency sound and images of what could have fallen over northern new mexico. sandia national labs also spotted the fire ball. scientist say- what they saw is unusual. "we get a lot of minute thumbnail 06:15 pm questions about things like this because it didn't really look like a typical meteor where it was just a flash of light, and then it was gone. because of the length of this one and there were a lot of very bright flares with it so it was sort of a steady, you know, light source. so there were a lot of flares going on. it was actually pretty exceptional." it's hard to speculate on the size of the meteor particular meteor maybe basketball sized maybe a filing cabinet sized or possibly as large as a small car." in comparing the two videos- scientists will have a better idea of where it may have either fallen - or evaporated. right now some guesses put the fireball near chaco canyon in the four corners - or near taos ... astronomers- are asking for any video that may have captured the meteor - so they can triangulate that exact position... that includes surveillance video from parking lots minute thumbnail 06:16 pm that may show reflections of the meteor passing over on things like a car windshield. to get more information - go to our website- kob.com.
