Yesterday Meghna, one of my students, called me up. She was excited. She had recently joined a retail company in Gurgaon on the outskirts of Delhi. The company had more than 700 products in their inventory. Her boss wanted to know about all products in the 'mobile phone' category with a purchase price of greater than Rs.2500. He needed the result in the next 15 minutes as he was doing some very important calculations and he was unable to locate the Excel data on his computer and he was going to meet his boss in an hour. 15 Minutes! You need about 1/2 a minute to do this kind of thing in Excel. I told Meghna to relax, open the Excel file and use the 'auto' filter feature in Excel. In about a minute we had filtered the Excel data and printed the results. Meghna said: You are great, Sir. I just told her to get some nice chocolate cakes when she visits me next.
