I look at the clock next to my bed. Joy is still asleep; she must’ve been exhausted. I know Drew doesn’t know what “right back” means – he’s always late and his 5 minutes are 20 – but I know he doesn’t take two hours… My stomach suddenly growls loudly, reminding me I haven’t eaten in a long time. I look over at Joy and decide I can’t leave her here alone again. I crawl up next to her and shake her lightly. “Joy, sweetie, it’s time to wake up,” I whisper. She wakes up slowly and when she sees me, she starts to tremble and cry. “It’s going to be okay, alright?” I promise. I pull her into my lap and slowly rock her back and forth. “I want my mommy,” she sniffles. “I know, Joy… You’ll be back with Mommy soon, okay?” I say, hope in my voice. She nods and I kiss her head. “You want something to eat?” I ask her. She looks up at me with an insane amount of fear in her eyes. “It’s okay, Joy… I can go get you something, okay?” I offer. “Come with me to the other room, we can get you a coloring book,” I offer. She nods and we hop off the bed. I hold her small hand and we walk through the bathroom. When she sees the pink room, she squeals and runs around. I smile and watch her check everything out. I lock the door to the outside and kneel down next to her as she looks through the coloring books. “Joy, sweetie, I’m going to lock you in this room so they can’t come in okay?
