newcastle united caused an english soccer sensation on wednesday with the re-appointment of kevin keegan as manager, a full eleven years after he'd walked away from the job. the 56-year-old, who played for the magpies in the 1980s, before returning as boss for five years from 1992, succeeds sam allardyce who left st james' park last week. portsmouth manager harry redknapp was reportedly the club's first choice, but he committed his future to the south-coast outfit, paving the way for keegan's third spell on tyneside. keegan, who also had a brief reign in charge of the england national team, has been out of football management since leaving manchester city in 2005. but there have been fervent calls from newcastle fans for a return to the type of attacking play which took them to runners-up in the premier league under his leadership in 1996.
