A dramatic sight on Hawaii's Big Island, lava lights up the evening sky as it pours down the slopes of the Kilauea volcano. By day the river of molten rock continued its path towards the sea. The lava threatened a group of houses. Most were abandoned in 1983 when an eruption destroyed dozens of homes. Since then the flows have wiped out nearly 200 buildings, and consumed more than 14 kilometres of road. Kilauea is one of the world's most active volcanos and also its most popular, with thousands of tourists each year flocking to catch a glimpse of nature at its most powerful. Andrew Potter, Reuters
