On the surface it sounds like an odd decision made by Grant Marlenee. He quit his job to do something not many people would ever imagine doing! Perry Olson caught up with him at the Souris Valley Golf Course in Minot at least when he came up for air... (Perry Olson - KX News) Have you ever wondered how many golf balls are in hazards like this? The answer is a lot! (Grant Marlenee - Fergus Falls, MN) My record by myself is a little over 8 thousand...and that was Tuesday here! That's right...Grant has been known to pull up thousands of balls each day from water hazards at courses from North Dakota, to Minnesota, to Florida. (Grant) My story is that I have been diving for thirty years and golfing badly for ten. One day I asked the pro if anyone was working the course and he said 'no'! That 'no' led to a change in career as this is now his full time job. And a dirty job at that. (Perry Olson) We can't see Grant working under this murky mess, and he can't see a thing either! (Grant) I go by feel and use a guide rope that I put on an arm and swing on that. Following that rope has led to thousands of golf balls...and a few other items as well. (Grant) Hockey sticks, lots of clubs and I even got a gun out of Duluth. I turned that into the police so they could have a lab look at that. There must have been a reason it was in the water! But not everything he finds in the water is...well, a thing. (Grant) Usually when I go to Florida it is in the winter because it is too cold for the locals and the alligators! They are laying on the banks and aren't too interested. Although I have been in with some six footers out. Each bag like this carries about 400 balls he sells them to a refurbishing business for nine cents a ball That's about 36 dollars a bag and each bag takes only about 15 minutes to fill... (Grant) Frequently I sweep my arms like this and I get a half dozen and the same thing coming back. So the next time you dump a ball or two in the drink during your round...know it won't stay there forever...it's just waiting for Grant to give it life once again. Perry Olson, KX News.
