the 2008 africa cup of nations is underway and we're with five-time winners cameroon... valentino rossi helps unveil yamaha's new motogp machine... and the snowboard world cup circuit hits spain. soccer cameroon football fever reached the city of kumasi on saturday, as hundreds of people crowded into wesley college to watch cameroon continue their preparations for the 26th african cup of nations. the 'indomitable lions' are attempting to win the tournament in ghana for the first time in six years, and the fifth time since the competition started in sudan in 1957. widely predicted to reach the knockout stages from group c along with trophy holders egypt, cameroon's other first round opponents are sudan and zambia. but newcastle united midfielder and team captain geremi is taking nothing for granted. soundbite (english) "we are coming into this competition like one of the favourites. we know that, people knew that, so we're going to try and represent our country like usual. we know that it's not going to be easy, but we will fight for that." supercaption: geremi, cameroon midfielder cameroon are led by veteran coach otto pfister, who guided togo to their first world cup finals in germany 2006. the 'lions' first match is against the tough egyptians on tuesday, with barcelona striker samuel eto'o, who trained alone on saturday following a recent injury, hoping to help kickstart a successful campaign. motogp yamaha the fiat yamaha team, headed by star rider valentino rossi, went back to their roots at the launch of their 2008 motogp machine - the new yzf-m1 was unveiled at the historic lingotto building in turin, the former fiat factory. in the second year of fiat's sponsorship, yamaha have high hopes for the yzf-m1. they believe this machine will help them regain the constructors championship from ducati, and take rossi to his sixth premier class title. fiat yamaha have also partnered rossi with former 250cc world champion jorge lorenzo but, somewhat bizarrely, the team will operate a split garage this season - that's because rossi will race on bridgestone tyres, with his new team mate on michelins. soundbite: (english) "yes, it's a difficult decision, it's a risk. but i'm happy, i'm very happy, because i think it will be very positive for our performance." supercaption: valentino rossi, fiat yamaha rider. fiat yamaha take the yzf-m1 to sepang in malaysia this week for early season testing - rossi and lorenzo aim to be in the best possible shape for the first race of 2008 in qatar on the 9th of march. snowboard spain the fis world cup parallel giant slalom kicked off two days of competition at the spanish resort of la molina on saturday. dutch snowboarder nicolien sauerbreij made much the better start in the women's final. claudia riegler of austria chased hard, but her opponent still managed to stretch her lead over course of the run. the result was sauerbreij's first victory in the discipline this season. the men's final was decided after a slip by anton unterkofler. already trailing because of a better start by austrian compatriot andreas prommegger, unterkofler skidded off in the middle part of the course. unchallenged, prommegger cruised across the line to win. tyler jewell beat fellow american marc iselin over their two runs to take the final podium spot. sunday saw the season's last remaining parallel slalom. nicolien sauerbreij entered the women's final level on points with heidi neururer of austria. but it was the latter who came out on top in this. the austrian picked up the maximum 1000 points for an aggregate of 4800 world cup points - 200 better off than the netherlands' racer. the overall world cup leader didn't even come close to a minor placing in the men's contest - just 28 points and 31st place went to france's mathieu bozzetto. he still holds a healthy lead after his weekend in spain though, with rok flander now representing his closest challenger. the slovenian picked up an easy victory over austria's benjamin karl in the final. bozzetto has a total haul of 4130 points - flander trails by 720 with janne korpi of finland a further ten points in arrears.
