Hundreds of supporters of former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori hold vigil for their former leader after court announces he will stand trial on November 26. Some 300 supporters of former Peruvian president Alberto Fujimori held a vigil on Friday (October 05) around a monument in a show of support of their jailed leader who is facing charges of human rights violations and corruption during his government. The demonstrators, joined by Fujimori's son Kenyi, marched around the "Eye that Cries" monument which was erected in honour of the victims of violence during the 1980s and 1990s. "It seems very ironic to me that all of those people who gave their lives, risked their lives to achieve this peace are now being accused and persecuted for (alleged) human rights violations," Kenyi Fujimori said. Friday's demonstration coincided with the announcement by the Special Session of the Supreme Court that the trial of Fujimori would begin on November 26. The former leader is facing a 30-year prison term and fines of more than $30 million. Fujimori, who ruled from 1990 to 2000, stands accused of half a dozen charges, including the notorious Barrios Altos and La Cantuta massacres in the early 1990s, when Peru was at war with the brutal Maoist guerrilla group Shining Path. Students, a professor and a child were among the 25 people killed in the slaughters, which Peruvian state prosecutors blame on Fujimori's counterinsurgency troops that searched for guerrilla sympathizers.
