Army controls Lebanese streets
 Source: Mediascrape
Traffic returns to normal in the streets of Beirut as people wake up to a day of mourning. Smoking rubble and charred cars are what is left from the night of violence that left eight people dead and dozens wounded. The violence erupted during a protest against power cuts in a predominately Shi'ite neighbourhood, where protestors set fire to cars and burnt tires blocking main roads. SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) ANGRY PROTESTER SAYING : " We are demanding water and electricity and Siniora (Lebanese Prime Minister) is sitting in the governmental palace and we are dying here , Geagea (Anti-Syrian christian leader) is killing us, where is the government who left the hardships on us ?" The Lebanese government have been in political deadlock since November after failing to elect a president. The eight men who were shot dead are linked to Shi'ite Muslim groups, who oppose the anti-Syrian governing coalition. An Amal MP says that they had nothing to do with the violence. SOUNDBITE: (Arabic) AMAL MP ALI HASSAN KHALIL SAYING: "The action today was spontaneous, unorganized; we are absolutely not responsible. We called on everyone to get off the streets. We have nothing to do with the gunfire and we are committed to investigating what happened." As news of the shooting spread more opposition supporters poured on to the streets, and gunmen were seen in Shi'ite and Christian areas. It is still not clear who is responsible for the shootings, and as the army launches an investigation, a country that was once rocked by years of civil war is gripped with political conflict and heightened tensions.
