LEBANON: Hezbollah-inspired "Resistance" perf...

Residents of Beirut's southern suburbs have cottoned on to a trendy new perfume inspired by the war between Israel and the Shi'ite Hezbollah guerilla group in Lebanon this summer -- "Resistance Perfume". The perfume, which comes in different varieties, is accompanied by a card with a photo of Hezbollah's leader Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah and the text of one of his speeches to Hezbollah fighters during the war. "After the 'Truthful Promise' operation (referring to the Hezbollah capture of two Israeli soldiers and killing of eight others in July 2006), the person who brought these samples to us wanted to promote this idea to remind people of this operation. He included (in the packaging) the Sayyed's (Hassan Nasrallah) message to the Hezbollah fighters and added some perfume as a symbol of it. It's a new idea and he wanted to market it," Mohammad, an employee at the Bint el-Huda shop selling the perfume said. The perfume's designer and producer, Haj Ali Akil al-Khalil, said it was his way of showing support to Hezbollah; against Israel and against the party's critics who are calling for its military arm to be disbanded. While the perfume has not been officially authorised or endorsed by the Lebanese party commonly known as 'The Resistance', Hezbollah officials have not voiced any objections to Haj Khalil's use of their brand to promote his product.
