Wildfire in the City
Duration: 9:48Source: YouTube
"Wildfire in the City" shows the rapid advance of wildland fires in wind-driven conditions and as flames react to slope, burning quickly uphill to homes where defensible space measures, such as removal of vegetation away from structures, thinning of vegetation downslope and limbing trees, were inadequate. The rapid spread of the fire through wildland vegetation on open spaces within the city rapidly extends to fences and trees, decks and to the homes that are quickly fully involved with fire. Common to all three fires was inadequate defensible space, extremely dry vegetation, fire burning upslope, yard waste such as grass clippings and tree limbs being dumped over the hillside behind the structures. Other factors contributing to rapid spread of fire that can be seen in the film include high winds, flammable vegetation such as ornamental bushes and trees too close to structures, and wood shake shingle roofs. "Wildfire In The City" was produced by Reno Fire Inspector Jason O'Neal through the Reno Fire Department's Division of Fire Prevention using actual film shot during each of the Reno wildland fire incidents.
