Guantanamo prisoner video released
Then 16 years old - Canadian Omar Khadr is interrogated inside Guantanamo Bay. Seen in this grainy video released by his lawyers, Khadr was questioned by Canadian intelligence at the controversial U.S. base for four days in 2003. Khadr is accused of throwing a grenade during a 2002 battle in Afghanistan that killed an American medic. At 15 years old, he was shot twice in the back. (SOUNDBITE) (English) CANADIAN PRISONER KHADR SAYING: "I requested medical over a long time, he doesn't do anything about it." (SOUNDBITE) (English) UNIDENTIFIED INTERROGATOR'S VOICE OVER (KHADR IN VIEW) SAYING: "They look like they are healing well to me. You know, I am not a doctor but I think you are getting good medical care." (SOUNDBITE) (English) CANADIAN PRISONER KHADR SAYING: "No I'm not." The video apparently shows Khadr distressed and crying. Nathan Whitling is one of Khadr's Canadian lawyers. SOUNDBITE) (English) NATHAN WHITLING, KHADR'S LAWYER, SAYING "Contrary to everything the Canadian public has been told about Omar Khadr, the tapes do not show a dangerous terrorist. But instead a frightened, wounded, Canadian boy pleading for help from Canadian officials." Khadr's lawyers have been in a long legal battle to return him to Canada. SOUNDBITE: NATHAN WHITLING, KHADR'S LAWYER, SAYING: "Omar's cries for help have gone unheeded by this government for almost 6 years. Described by Canadian government officials and even by senior U.S. military personnel at Guantanamo as salvageable, non-radicalized and a good kid, it is beyond comprehension that Prime Minister Harper continues to tolerate the treatment of a Canadian citizen in this manner." The Canadian government has refused to intervene with Washington, saying military hearings at Guantanamo provide the only way to answer the charges against him. The U.S. holds about 265 detainees at Guantanamo Bay. Human rights groups have long criticized conditions and interrogations at the prison - and called for its closure. Khadr is set to stand trial for murder at Guantanamo in October. Sarah Irwin, Reuters
