Jim Flaherty

July 2, 2008 Beyond Politics Minister of Finance Jim Flaherty grew up in a large family in the Montreal neighbourhood of Lachine. An exceptional student, Flaherty attended Loyola High School but it was his agility and playmaking on the ice that won him a hockey scholarship at Princeton University. Flaherty then pursued a law degree at the University of Toronto and became a Bay Street lawyer where he met the woman who was later to become his wife, Christine Elliott. Together they have three children, triplets, all boys. After a lengthy career at Queen's Park where Jim became a prominent cabinet minister, he moved to the federal scene in 2006, as the MP for Whitby-Oshawa, and Minister of Finance. Flaherty's spouse, Christine Elliott has also decided to pursue public life, she is now the MPP for Whitby-Ajax at Queen's Park, the same riding that was formerly held by her husband. Catherine Clark talks to Jim Flaherty about how he juggles his family obligations with his ministerial responsibilities on this episode of Beyond Politics .
