Can one Desire and be Free at the same time? Is Freedom above Desire or Vice Versa? Vice Versa is a trip into one's desire. It represents the desire of an alien form to move like a human being. This alien form has the ability and freedom to shift between various patterns of movement that can refute the rules that normally regulate human movement. Hence its movement can deny gravity and be out of the centre axis of the body. As the figure passes from different types it steps into a game. However, the closer it gets to its desire, the more it loses the control of the game. All the movement in Vice Versa is human movement generated by Jamie Dryburgh, choreographed by Mariela Nestora, edited by Reuben Irving and directed by Maria Wiener. The movements were captured by Vicon 8, an optical Motion Capture system at Oxford Metrics’ Lab in Oxford. The music has been deliberately chosen for its distorting qualities only to reinforce this continuous shifting between the various forms, shapes and types of movement that occur within the piece. Vice Versa was created in May 2000 and ever since has been shown in London, Brighton and Athens at a few dance festivals, short listed for the “Desire” Competition in Manchester’s Kino film festival in November 2001, short listed for the multimedia Mobius competition in Beijing in November 2001 and won the First Award at the Fiction Category at the Mobius competition in Athens, in December 2000.
