Oil Provides Business Opportunity
 Source: ClipSyndicate
Take a drive in western North Dakota and you see oil rigs and pumps. But there is more to the oil business than what goes on at the drilling rig. Donnell Preskey reports on how other businesses are helping North Dakota's oil industry grow... (Donnell Preskey) It's hard to put a number on how many businesses are geared around the oil industry. But as the oil industry booms many other businesses are feeling the boom as well. North Dakota oil production is on a record pace... And oil related businesses are increasing their work to keep up. Steffes Incorporated in Dickinson started in the 60's making church furniture now they're building oil tanks. (Todd Mayer / Steffes Inc.) People around here involved in oil industry approached Steffes 2006 saying there's going to be a need of oil tanks in this area. Steffes has completly changed their business because of the oil industry. In 2006 they were making grain bins and had 4 employees today they have 20. Steffes completed it's first tank a year ago... (Mayer) 500 tanks since that time, continue at increasing capacity - still growing it seems. The tanks that hold 400 barrels of oil all start from a 38 foot long sheet of metal. It goes through a roller that shapes it into it's ring shape. Then employes weld the pieces together. (Mayer) Our tanks are storing the oil before truck picks up and takes to pipeline or somewhere else - so as well is pumping this is what's receiving the oil. (Donnell Preskey) This is the finished tank This is where Steffes' job ends and where another business' work begins. The tanks are picked up and hauled to oil sites. Someone else sets them up and gets them ready to store oil. It's one example of all the hands that touch the oil industry. (Duane Jesch) been in business for 25 years - last year ramping up for new Bakken play in ND increased fleet size by probably double. Jesch works for Missouri Basin Well Service. His trucks service 50 rigs a day 24 hours 7 days a week. (Jesch) Haul all the drilling aspects. There's a lot of fluids used in drilling these wells, fresh water, mud products for conditioning the hole. We haul anything in a liquid that can be put in a tanker. They also haul crude oil from the wells to pipelines. And just like the rigs and pumps Missouri Basin trucks are scattered across the area 120 of them.. (Jesch) we're just having fun right now Jesch says with the growing oil activity his company is one that has to increase it's work to take care of the operators so more oil can make it's way out... (Jesch) The numbers we hear we're loving, and we want to keep growing with this thing. If it takes 250 trucks, in the next six months whatever it takes we're going to try to grow. (Donnell Preskey) Missouri Basin Well Service knows about growing they started as a one truck business in 1978. They've seen the boom and bust and they say this time around business is more stable. Both Steffes and Missouri Basin say as long as they can find workers they'll keep growing. Jobs in the oil industry are what we'll be focusing on tomorrow night...
