There are some questions about the police pursuit of a man who ended up driving the wrong way on an interstate. The chase ended Thursday morning along Interstate 435 near Interstate 70 in Independence. Police said they found a stolen minivan parked at a motel on East Highway 40. Officers said that when they tried to make an arrest, two suspects tried to run over those officers. Police said the officers shot at the two suspects, who sped off in the van. Officers said the van driver went the wrong way on I-435 before bailing out of the vehicle. He was taken into custody. On Friday, Mark Collins, 44, was charged with assault on a law enforcement officer and resisting arrest. No one was injured in the chase. Independence police policy states that officers are not to drive the wrong way on interstate highways or other divided highways to pursue a suspect. Police told KMBC's Martin Augustine that they're concerned an officer did pursue the chase on the wrong side of the interstate. Witness Jason White told KMBC that police did go the wrong way on I-435. "Frankly, that was the most distraught situation I've ever seen in my life," White said. White said the suspect vehicle sped right past him and was going the wrong way. And then, he said, came the police cars. "My hands are still sweating. Because it was a miracle of the Lord that no one was killed," White said. White, who is a former police officer, said he thinks the pursuit should have been handled differently. On Monday, Independence police will review dashboard camera video of the incident.
