Renault's Fernando Alonso took his second successive Formula One title on Sunday (October 22), finishing runner-up in a Brazilian Grand Prix won by Ferrari's local favourite Felipe Massa. Alonso is the youngest double world champion in Formula One history. Renault retained the constructors' championship they won last year with 206 points to Ferrari's 201. Alonso ended the season with 134 points, 13 more than Schumacher. "I still need a couple of days to realise what I now know of the second championship. It has been a very tough championship, I had to fight a lot and in the end winning it has made me twice as happy," said Alonso. Alonso's fans were carefully watching his every move as he had needed to secure just one point to guarantee the championship at Interlagos. Ultimately that was never in doubt as he finished second behind Schumacher's Brazilian team mate Felipe Massa. Alonso won seven grands prix this year, the same as last season, while Renault retained their constructors' title despite Ferrari winning more races. Oviedo, Alonso's hometown, partied with many people celebrating in the city square. "Yes it was very hard," said the Spaniard. "I think up and down. Some days, some races, very happy races, some sad races like we had in Monza and in Hungary we didn't finish the race.
