How much are you willing to pay for a good walleye dinner? How about somewhere in the neighborhood of 30-thousand dollars?! That's what some people end up paying when their truck plunges through the ice on a frozen North Dakota lake. As the ice fishing season gets into full swing, officials are urging caution. Debbie Kuehn has more... Every year, as the icy winds polish the surface of the Upper Souris and a blanket of snow wraps itself around the sleeping grasses...they migrate...not to the south, but out here where the perch and the northern pike play. Almost overnight a tiny tundra town appears. The main attraction is fish. (Tom Pabian, Mgr. - Upper Souris Wildlife Refuge) We're starting to see an influx of people you know with the nice weather we've had. People are starting to venture out. You know with hunting season winding down, people are starting to think more and more about ice fishing. Every weekend we're seeing more and more people so... Yes, 'tis the season to be jigging! Upper Souris Wildlife Refuge Manager Tom Pabian says the ice fishing season seems to be getting into full swing. But even though the ice appears to be sufficiently thick...he cautions anglers to be careful. (Tom) Maybe someplace where someone had a permanent house sitting several days could weaken the ice... pressure ridges are forming in unknown areas...areas around bridges, beaver lodges will create unsafe ice conditions. Pabian advises opening your window if you're going to drive out on to the ice so you can have a chance to escape if the unthinkable happens. Also carrying special utensils like ice picks could help you pull yourself out of the icy waters. (Tom) You know in my book, there's no walleye or perch or pike that's worth falling through the ice for. Because when it comes down to it, the catch of the day shouldn't be weigned in tons! Debbie Kuehn, KX News. One more word of caution, ATVs and snowmobiles are not allowed on the refuge and visitors are required to leave by 10pm.
