Rangers captain, Mark Messier, publicly promised that the Rangers would win Game 6 trailing 3-2 in the series. He made good on his promise and scored three goals in the third period to propel the Rangers to the Stanley Cup Finals, where they ultimately defeated Vancouver in 7 games.
