A stunning victory for the Scottish National Party and another crushing blow for Britain's ruling Labour Party. The pro-independence SNP pulled off the Glasgow East by-election, one of Labour's safest seats, by 365 votes. Just three years ago Labour won here with a huge 13,500 majority. The loss follows other recent election defeats for the ruling party and could boost expectations that Labour's 11 years in power may be nearing an end. Conservative opposition leader David Cameron said the result was a dreadful one for Labour and urged Brown to call a general election. (SOUNDBITE) (English) CONSERVATIVE PARTY LEADER DAVID CAMERON, SAYING: "I think the Prime Minister should have his holiday but then I think we need an election. We need change in this country and that's how change should come about.'' Some analysts believe the defeat, in one of Britain's largest cities, could prompt moves to oust Brown but he says he's getting on with the job of leadership. (SOUNDBITE) (English) UK PRIME MINISTER GORDON BROWN SAYING: "It's exactly what people want me to do. People know that there is a wideworld problem - We're dealing with it. We'll continue to get on with the job.'' With his popularity slumping since he took over from Tony Blair 13 months ago, some in Prime Minister Brown's party may well want someone else to lead them into the next general election.
