In the summer of 2002, Mellencamp's best friend, Tim White of Billboard fame, died suddenly. At the subsequent memorial concerts, John played a decidedly Mellencamp version of Robert Johnson's "Stones in My Passway" for his friend. That led to an offer by Columbia records to record an American roots cover album--his way. Mellencamp threw himself into the task of choosing the songs and serving as the catalyst to reinterpret them for a new generation, and this DVD was born.
