Chinese quake germ risk
 Source: MediaScrape
Rocks topple down a mountain side in yet another of the many landslides which are causing new chaos in post earthquake China. These are the treacherous conditions soldiers and emergency workers face as they try to get a grip on making China's devastated towns and villages safe. And after the multiple threats of aftershocks, landslides and the so called "quake lakes" formed by trapped rivers following May's earthquake, there is the new threat of disease. Here in Beichuan, one of the worst hit towns, quake lake water has been allowed to flood through to release pressure from a bulging blocked river. Now authorities worry that decomposed and undiscovered bodies in the water could result in heavy pollution and sanitation issues. Soldiers have been sent in to disinfect the entire area. They wear heavy protective clothing and for some, the summer heat and 15 kilograms of disinfection equipment proved too much. SOUNDBITE: Xu Libing, soldier saying: (Mandarin) "We usually lose a kilogram of sweat in an hour by wearing this protective outfit. It is really exhausting." More than 5,000 health workers have geared up to disinfect all the earthquake damaged villages and towns. Doctors and nurses are working in refugee camps to protect survivors from getting ill as the weather gets hotter every day. China has announced that the rebuilding of roads linking the quake zone to the rest of the country will take at least three years. Reconstruction of all roads will take eight. It's just one element of a daunting future for this stricken part of the world. Penny Tweedie, Reuters.
