Russia oil spill aftermath
 Source: Mediascrape
Sea birds pay the price of the oil spill from a tanker broken up by Sunday's deadly storm in the northern mouth of the Black Sea. Russian emergency teams are racing against time to clear the oil from beaches. The worst devastation is in the narrow Kerch Strait dividing the Black Sea from the Azov Sea. But worsening weather has halted plans to use specialist vessels to scoop oil from the sea surface. SOUNDBITE: Oleg Mitvol, state environmental agency, saying (Russian): "We will have problems in the Azov Sea for another ten to 15 years. The only effective way to stop the pollution from spreading is not just using oil shields but building barriers and dams across parts of the Kerch Strait linking the Tusla Spit with the Tusla Peninsula." Some 2, 000 tonnes of fuel oil were dumped into the sea when the Volgoneft-139 tanker was wrecked by what weather experts say was a storm in a century. Winds up to 30 metres a second also sank three other cargo ships and grounded others. The bodies of three crew members have been found but up to five others are still missing. Russia has launched a review of shipping safety in the wake of what officials have called the biggest mass sinking of vessels in the country's modern history. Paul Chapman, Reuters
