Kenya braces for protests
 Source: Mediascrape
Kenyan police barricade the venue for opposition protests planned for the capital, Nairobi. The government's banned opposition rallies but that has so far had little effect. Opposition supporters have fought running battles with police who are accused of opening fire on the demonstrators. Residents in Nairobi say their lives are in chaos SOUNDBITE: Asha Ali, Nairobi resident, saying (Swahili): "Children aren't going to school, the standard of education is going down, the economy isn't doing well, and we're even scared to go to work." A violent backlash was unleashed in the wake of disputed elections that saw President Mwai Kibaki hold on to power despite predictions of an opposition victory. Kenya's national human rights watchdog says Kibaki and opposition leader Raila Odinga need to see the bloodshed their respective supporters are inflicting on one another. SOUNDBITE: Maina Kiai, Kenya National Commission of Human Rights, saying (English): "I urge Raila Odinga to go to Eldoret, Nakuru, Kericho and other place where PNU supporters are being killed and I also urge Kibaki to go to Kisumu, Kakamega, Migori, where ODM supporters are being killed. Then we can start the process of healing." Raila Odinga says the rising death toll is attributable entirely to the President he accuses of election fraud. SOUNDBITE: Raila Odinga, opposition leader, saying (English): "He is responding by shooting and killing them so he is entirely responsible for the loss of life you have seen in our country since the rigging of elections on the 27th of December." An estimated 650 people have lost their lives since the eruption of violence. At least nine have been killed in the past three days of protests, with no end to the crisis yet in sight.
