Kayaking the Nantahala - Jim, Matt, Guy & Bruce
Duration: 2:13Source: YouTube
Jim, Matt, Guy and Bruce drove down from Kentucky to North Carolina, camped, got up the next morning and kayaked the Nantahala... twice. It was a lot of fun, but I was a bit tired the second time. We had the Nantahala Outdoor Center (NOC dot com) provide our shuttle service up to the put-in and we paddled back down to the take-out at the NOC. It's a 2 to 2.5 hour run with fairly sustained class I and II rapids, with the final rapid just above the NOC take-out being a class III falls. The Nantahala is fed from Fontana Lake from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM to run hydroelectric generators, so the rapids tend to be fairly consistent, and there is no paddling in the late afternoon or evening. The water is fed from the bottom of the lake, so it's very cold, about 50 F, even in the late summer. Dress accordingly. You can see fog over the water in the early videos where we're near the dam at the put-in. The fog can be so dense that it's difficult to read the rapids, but on both of our runs the fog had dissipated by about the halfway point. This video is a chronological composite of several shorter videos. The footage shot from my kayak is almost always the least interesting part of the paddling, because I can only shoot video in the calm portions. That video was from the first run down the Nantahala. The video at the end showing the class III falls was shot on the second run of the day, and was shot from the bank. I need a waterproof camera that can be mounted onto the side of my helmet.
