It is the first time that a North Korean citizen who is not a defector will appear as a model in a South Korean commercial. According to the company, an affiliate of Samsung Group, 23-year-old Cho Myong-ae, a member of the Mansudae Art Troupe based in Pyongyang, is currently shooting the four-part series of commercials for Samsung's cell phone brand Anycall. North Korean dancer Cho Myong-ae, seen here, will star alongside pop singer Lee Hyo-lee of the South in a series of commercials for Anycall mobile phones produced by Samsung Electronics. / Yonhap ``Her young and vibrant image as dancer goes well with Anycall,’’ the company said in a statement. Cho is already a familiar personality to many in Korea. Her star quality and beauty stood out among the other North Korean dancers in an inter-Korean ceremony in Seoul in August 2002, when she presented a dance coordinated with a traditional drum performance. Her fans created a fan club on popular Internet portal site Daum, featuring her profile, pictures, schedules and movements, which now has more than 12,000 members. The South Korean commercial staff and Cho met for the first time on April 2 to shoot the commercial in Shanghai, China. In the commercial series, Cho will appear with Samsung's main female model, a pop star Lee Hyo-lee, as representatives of South and North Korea respectively, Cheil said. Although Lee Hyo-ri shot her commercial around the same time in Shanghai, the two models did not meet each other then. According to an official from the company, it is highly likely that the two will meet during the second shooting there in early June. The four-series commercial will depict the themes of encounter, harmony, empathy and hope, in that order, it said. The commercial maker said it has been in contact with the Mansudae Art Troupe since January through entertainment management agents, which it did not identify. It said that it could convince the North Korean agents by emphasizing the meaning of ``cultural exchange through a commercial’’. It has already completed advertisements for the print media. It also said that the contract period with Cho is one year, and it decided not to reveal its payment for the model. The commercials will be broadcast by as early as late next month, Cheil said. michelle@koreatimes.co.kr htttp://www.anycall.com/exciting/exciting_event_ad_tv_001.jsp?ads_num=106&gbn=tv (SEC Anycall) http://openmobile.co.kr/mobilestory/?fn=cf_view&number=470&page=1&keyfield=product&key=삼성%20애니콜&code=cf (Video) http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/200505/kt2005051819154453460.htm (News) http://blog.naver.com/comeonsunny/120014322370 (BGM)
