바이올리니스트이자 피아니스트인 어머니 밑에서 자라 학교의 Talant Show에서부터 공연을 시작했다. 이후 그녀는 일본의 팝스타 Keiko Nakanishi와 'All I Wanna Do'를 부르기도 했으며, 1998년 초 디즈니 에니메이션 [Mulan]의 주제곡 'Reflection'을 통해 공식적으로 데뷔했다.솔로 데뷔 첫 싱글인 'Genie In a Bottle'은 발매된 지 1달 만에 빌보드 싱글 차트 1위에 오르고, 앨범 [Christina]도 발매되자마자 첫 주에 1위에 오른다. 그리고 급기야는 2000년 2월에 있었던 그래미에서 라이벌 브리트니 스피어스, 매이시 그레이 등을 제치고 신인상을 수상하는 기염을 토했다.
