Romney says he is doing his best to follow in the footsteps of Ronald Reagan and the conservative tradition. He says John McCainwho is leading the polls so far in the GOP racerepresents a different portion of their party. (Mitt Romney, GOP Candidate) andamp;quot;I want our party to stay in the house that Ronald Reagan built. I don't believe we want to take a left turn. Senator McCain is a national hero but his positions on issues are very different than mine. He voted against the Bush tax cuts...he voted against drilling for andamp;lt;a href=andamp;quot;http://www.kxnet.com/t/oilandamp;quot; class=andamp;quot;kxInlineLinkandamp;quot;andamp;gt;oilandamp;lt;/aandamp;gt; in ANWAR...he voted for and fought for McCain-Kennedy, which would give amnesty to all illegal aliens in this country.andamp;quot; Romney says great progress has been made with the troop surge in andamp;lt;a href=andamp;quot;http://www.kxnet.com/t/iraqandamp;quot; class=andamp;quot;kxInlineLinkandamp;quot;andamp;gt;Iraqandamp;lt;/aandamp;gt;. He says it is essential to him that the country does not allow Iraq to fall in the hands of AlQaida. (Mitt Romney, GOP Candidate) andamp;quot; And therefore we will not take our troops out until that safety has been achieved. I believe that you're going to see with General Petraeous' plan a brigade a month taken out of Iraq. You'll have our troop strength down to about fifteen brigades as of July. The result of that I think is that you're going to see the Iraqi military stand up.andamp;quot; Romney says when he was governor of Massachusetts for four years, he balanced the budget. But he says he is not a life-long politician. Romney worked in the private sector for 25 years as a businessman. He says he will fight to keep the economy strong.
