3-17 (CNN) David Paterson is New York's first black governor. He took the oath of office this afternoon at the state Capitol in Albany. Paterson rose from lieutenant governor to replace Eliot Spitzer, who resigned 14 months into his term amid a prostitution scandal. Paterson says he will help the state heal from the scandal.
