"Playing the race card" is an idiomatic phrase referring to an allegation raised against a person who has brought the issue of race or racism into a debate, perhaps to obfuscate the matter. In one context, it alleges that someone has falsely accused another person of being a racist in order to gain some sort of advantage. In another, it refers to someone exploiting prejudice against another race for political or some other advantage.The media -- and conservative commentators Sean Hannity and Rush Limbaugh specifically -- have CLEARLY played the race card with respect to Barack Obama and his former pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright.Despite their daily/nightly portrayals and diatribes:a) There has been NO EVIDENCE presented that Reverend Jeremiah Wright is a racist who hates White people. In fact, REVEREND JEREMIAH WRIGHT WAS INVITED TO THE WHITE HOUSE BY PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON.b) Barack Obama has never espoused racism. In fact he has bent over backwards to avoid talking about race.c) The INFORMED VOTER knew about Obama's relationship with his church and former pastor almost a year or more ago -- when current critics didn't think he had a chance.
