Robert became a Member of the Boys & Girls Club in Norfolk, VA when he was in the 10th grade. He had just moved to a new town and the Club gave him the means to make new friends as well as getting him involved with several activities, including basketball. Following high school, Robert attended Presbyterian College. After graduating, he completed his military obligation in the Army and went on to become a teacher, coach and principal.
